Have you ever wondered what the difference is between Laser Hair Removal and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)? I did. After years of buying IPL hair removal sessions (and dreading the pain that comes with the treatment), friends would tell me about their successful and mostly pain-free laser experiences. But aren't they the same, I wondered? No, while the treatments are similar, their methods are different. With costs for permanent hair removal options priced lower than ever, more Australian woman are opting for these hair-free solutions.
Since their first clinic opened in 2008, Laser Clinics Australia has established a dominant position in the cosmetic clinic market. Rebecca Andrews, Director and Owner of Laser Clinics Australia Caringbah & Miranda, explains, "The basic difference between laser and IPL is essentially the method used to treat the hair. Both lead to permanent hair removal, although laser does so in a more orderly manner."
Laser Hair Removal - how it works:
"Laser generates a single wave length via a laser beam. The laser beam travels down the hair shaft to the follicle to [slow down] the hair at the source without disrupting surrounding tissue. The laser is attracted to the melanin in the hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser impairs the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth", said Andrews.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) - how it works:
Andrews went on to explain IPL, "Intense Pulsed Light is a technology that uses high powered flash lamps to generate a multi-level light source rather than a single wavelength produced by a laser. Given the light is not focused, it leads to a loss of energy and hence a laser is more efficient in removing hair permanently.
Leading Australian beauty salon franchise Brazilian Beauty has performed almost half a million IPL hair removal treatments since 2006 and says the popularity of the treatment is here to stay. Francesca Webster, CEO and Founder of Brazilian Beauty reports, 'Now that IPL is virtually the same price as waxing, many clients are opting for permanent hair removal,"
With demand for permanent hair removal options at its peak, the market has become saturated with salons and clinics offering the treatment at competitive prices. Both Andrews and Webster agree that clients seek reputable company with well-trained, experienced staff and the best treatment technologies. "It is always important to recognise the experience and expertise of the therapist performing the treatment as this can also determine the ultimate success of the treatment", said Andrews.
Webster agrees, "IPL and laser hair removal are advanced skin treatments, so it is vital to ensure you are in professional hands."
