Have you given your good a good exfoliation in the past month? If you answered no to then your skin is likely in need of an overhaul and who better to take care of it than the qualified and knowledgeable therapists at Laser Clinics Australia (LCA). Whilst specialising in laser hair removal, LCA offer a wide range of effective skin and body treatments to enhance your skin's appearance and give you more confidence. Cue LCA's microdermabrasion skin treatment which is popular to use on the face but can be used on most areas of the body also.
What is microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion treatments are used to improve your skin's appearance and texture both visually and to the touch. Perfect for all skin types, microdermabrasion can be used to tackle dry skin or even acneic, overactive skins. The treatment works to remove dead skin cells and resurface skin. The treatment is designed to tackle rough skin and results can last up to a month. Your LCA therapist will consult with you before choosing from one of 10 different crystal or diamond treatment heads to customise the session to your skin's type, condition and concerns. Having experienced microdermabrasion treatments in the past - and loved it - I was excited to visit my local LCA clinic for a micro treatment.
Is microdermabrasion safe to undertake when pregnant? Absolutely! Just remember to speak to your therapist and let them know you are pregnant. Be sure to request that skincare products used are customised and non-harmful to your pregnancy.
The Experience: From the moment I walked in to reception at my favourite Laser Clinics Australia salon in Erina, staff greeted me and asked me to complete a client skin card to help my therapist know more about me, my skin and the products I currently use. After completing the client card I was introduced to Bianca, my therapist for the session who took me into the treatment room and performed a skin consultation. Bianca specialises in both skincare treatments and laser hair removal. She explained the treatment and asked what I would like to achieve from the session.
Having been familiar with the treatment, I explained to Bianca that I love microdermabrasion because my overactive skin enjoys a good exfoliation to help new cells shine through. I explained that I usually love to use skincare rich in AHA's, glycolic acids and enzymes, however being 6 months pregnant at the time of writing this, I have had to use gentler alternatives. Bianca assured me the products used on my skin in conjunction with the physical exfoliation were gentle and safe yet also effective.
I was so surprised when my therapist asked me to lay on the treatment bed fully clothed - didn't she want me to undress and lay under a towel on the treatment bed? Not this time, I discovered as she thoroughly cleansed my skin and removed my makeup all without making a mess on my work dress, which sat along the base of my neck. Impressive! She deserved extra stars just for making the treatment so fuss-free and keeping my outfit clean.
During my microdermabrasion session, Bianca explained each Skinstitut product that was about to be applied to my skin, introducing me to its benefits and discussed its active ingredients with me do I could be confident the treatment was safe yet effective. First skin was cleansed with Skinstitut L-Lactic Cleanser, a mild yet effective milky skin cleanser made up of gentle lactic acid which loosens dead skin cells without upsetting the skin's natural balance. Lactic acid is also safe for pregnant women to use.
The Microdermabrasion: After prepping my skin, Bianca started the microdermabrasion exfoliation. Using a diamond treatment head suited to my skin (which is currently a little more sensitive than usual), my therapist worked the micro head along my skin, focusing on certain areas at a time. How does a microdermabrasion treatment feel? Imagine a mini vaccuum running along your skin, gently sucking it up as the tiny vaccuum head tugs along the skin's surface. Skin felt baby smooth within minutes of the treatment head touching my skin - I could feel my therapist's fingers gliding along my skin. A smaller treatment head was used around lips and nostrils so that no area was left untouched. Towards the end of my micro treatment, skin did start to feel a little hot and tingly and I began to look forward to finishing the micro component of the treatment, but this is to be expected from a treatment which deeply exfoliates skin.
Once finished, skin was prepped and massaged using Skinstitut Hydrating Mask to infuse skin with hydration after the microdermabrasion and it felt lovely. Skinstitut Multi-Active Mist was then spritzed on skin before the final step, Skinstitut Rejuvenate 15 Serum was pressed into the skin. And voila! Right after the treatment skin felt absolutely smooth, flawless and fresh - just a little tingly and hot to the touch. Visually cheeks were red post-treatment for 90 minutes, eventually calming down again so be sure to have a microdermabrasion treatment when yo do not have plans straight after. My therapist checked to see how my skin was feeling and offered aftercare advice including advising I did not exfoliate skin for 3-5 days post treatment.
Conclusion: Fast forward 24 hours and my skin felt softer than it has in years. All rough areas and dead skin cells that I had put up with are now long gone. My skin was feeling comfortable again and all redness had subsided. A few days later I celebrated my baby shower with glowing skin and felt fantastic. As usual I am super impressed and shall be booking my next appointment in about 6 weeks time. For best results Laser Clinics Australia recommend purchasing 6 fortnightly or monthly microdermabrasion treatments however the odd one here or there will certainly make a difference also. A big shout out and thank you to the wonderful team at Laser Clinics Australia Erina who always make me feel welcomed and comfortable during my laser hair removal and skin treatments. See you in a few weeks for my laser booking!
