Review: I started seeing my beauty therapist for Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal treatments back in 2009 and after just six sessions, I would estimate that at least 50% of the hair in the treated areas had fallen out. It was unbelievable to discover that after years of shaving, tweezing and painfully waxing these areas, suddenly the hair growth was stunted and remaining hair was left half as coarse at it was originally, even appearing much fairer and more sparse. Having experienced such positive results, I decided not to complete my other six sessions and to return when hair grew back again fully. Last year I was just about to pick up the phone to book more sessions when Philips approached me with their brand new and improved Philips Lumea Precision Plus, an at-home DIY hand-held IPL hair removal device. This model claims to be more effective than their first Lumea model and a lot less expensive than 12 treatments in various areas - especially when a lower leg averages around $150 a treatment. To say that I was thrilled was an understatement ... I was jumping for joy, and then some! Safe enough to use on the face and body, Lumea Precision Plus comes with two changeable window attachments that work on different sizes of the body. Once Lumea Precision Plus has been charged and turned on, you can choose from five different intensity settings and being an at-home device, I tend to use the higher settings because for safety reasons the intensity is a lot safer and less effective than a salon IPL machine. Hold the device flat against the skin, wait for the green light to appear on the top of the machine and then press the large button to activate the flash. Lumea Precision Plus features a prolonged lamp lifetime of 100,000 flashes, enabling women to use the device for a minimum of five years without the need for a replacement lamp.

It is important to know that IPL machines work more effectively on darker hair on a lighter skin pigment and I fit this ideal perfectly. So why has it taken me six months to share my review with you? Well, having used Lumea Precision Plus on various area (underarms, brazilian and lower legs) for the past six months, I must say that I am disappointed with this device and I am still awaiting proven results because what I have experienced in this time is not salon quality. Yes I have noticed small hair-free patches forming in all areas, but the patches are few and far between and I still have to shave. Daily. Using Lumea Precision Plus, legs take just eight minutes to treat, under arms take only a minute and the brazilian region can be finished in two minutes. Whilst it is recommended to use Lumea Precision Plus every four weeks to stunt hair growth, it can be used more often due to the device's lower intensity. Because I wanted to stunt the hair growth more often and target the three stages of growth, I decided to up the ante from four week treatments to treatments on a fortnightly basis but the overall result did not change and I am still stuck shaving daily. I know that the hair on my head grows quickly,as do my nails so whether my hair comes through faster than most people, I'm unsure but to still have to shave daily is just so frustrating. It kills me to express my disappointment but having to shave daily after this length of time using Lumea Precision Plus is just a shame and I honestly don't think I could justify the price when the results are only mediocre. If Philips create a new and much more effective Lumea in future then of course I will consider justifying $1,300 but unfortunately not in this instance.
