5 Minutes With ... Angela Bauer, Jorge

Have you met Jorge? Established in 2008 this funky home grown Australian brand delivers affordable collections that make reference to the Australian woman. Jorge offers unique flair with its stylish casual designs that make reference to 'street chic' and 'the inner fashionista'. We love their new Autumn / Winter 2013 campaign which really stays true to the brand's design core - the shoot is edgy, a little street, and very fashionable and fun. Winter 2013 combines easy to wear staple pieces with flirty florals, bold colours and fabulous prints. These pieces have been inspired by local women and international trends whilst remaining affordable, making Jorge a much-sought brand for the fashion savvy. Originally working in graphic design, Head Designer Angela Bauer stumbled into the role and has impressed us with her flair for design and passion for fashion. At the age of 25, she has a job that most of us dream about, travelling the world and playing with fabrics and styles for upcoming collections. Currently available in over 100 selected boutiques through Australia, New Zealand and Africa, it is safe to say that Jorge is fast becoming an iconic label for girls around the world. Spoilt sat down with Angela to talk about the other man in her life... Jorge!

Jorge adds ‘kapow’ to every outfit! How did the label begin? It sure does! We launched the label in 2008, and we continue to grow now with over 100 stockists globally.

How did the name Jorge eventuate? Is there meaning behind it? Well, J is my favourite letter so it had to start with J! After tossing around a few names, Jorge was born.

In a few words, how do you describe the Jorge woman? The Jorge girl! Oh she’s trouble! (laughs). No, she’s quite the opposite. She loves to have fun with fashion, mix feminine with street cool, she's confident, and is trend conscious but
not trend driven.

Your background is originally in graphic design. How different is life now? It certainly is different. When crossing over from the graphic department to designing for Jorge, there were so many new processes to learn, ranging methods, design techniques and really getting involved in the production side of things. But I have found my graphic skills really help in my current role too, especially when ranging and designing the collection, as the lines between the fashion and graphic worlds are really quite blurred and interconnected.

Flying around the world for business is a woman’s dream role! Do you pinch yourself? I do! It really is an amazing part of my role, I won’t lie! When we travel it’s definitely where a lot of our great ideas are born. We’re constantly bouncing ideas around as we see trends emerging from New York to inspiring street styles in Japan.

What does a typical day involve in the life of Jorge’s Head Designer? Oh I wish I could tell you but there is no such day as a typical day here! Which is really what I love about my job. It’s not just sitting in front of a computer day in and out, there’s constant change happening. Whether it’s discussing ideas with our team, travelling overseas, ranging and designing new collections, forecasting trends... there’s just so many different components, and all elements so equally important.

How does Jorge stand apart from other urban fashion brands? By counterbalancing trends with our own unique design elements, in an affordable way.

We love the clever blend of styles - they convert to all ages. Where do you gain inspiration? There are so many inspiration portals these days, whether it’s looking at the latest runway shows, blogs, thrift stores or overseas travels, but where I really love to look for my inspiration is to the streets. People watching! Both here and overseas, to discover what girls are wearing and how, whether it be mixing on-trend pieces with vintage finds or basic staples is what I find to be constant inspiration.

Do you ever worry about the consumer’s perception when designing a new collection? Definitely. I believe it’s SO important to think about the customer’s perspective and how they would react to new trends, silhouettes, and what their expectations would be. A happy customer means a happy designer! But in saying that, I also try not to over-analyse it and I
believe in our team’s experience and knowledge, otherwise I would never get a range finished!

Your A/W 2013 collection is fabulous! Do you have a favourite design? My favourite go-to piece this winter (because I am knitwear OBSESSED!) is our Dark Days Knit Dress. I love it for its versatility, and stud detailing around the cuffs - it’s a wardrobe staple with an on-trend twist. For a day look it’s just so easy to pair with cute sneakers, and at night pop on some killer boots for an effortless rock chic vibe.

Which celebrity best defines the Jorge girl? Blake Lively, not only is she a style icon but she always manages to look effortlessly chic, is confident in her choices and loves to have an attractive man bag! We also love, and see a glimpse of Cara Delevingne – she’s a girl who knows her own style, and how to wear a killer attitude!

Which do you love more...

Sandals OR heels? Neither.. sneakers! Summer or winter, dresses or boyfriend jeans, give me a pair of Chuck Taylors or Vans any day! I wear them with everything.
Bohemian chic OR super sleek? Can I say both? Day time boho for sure, but every now and then for a night on the town with the girls a bit of super sleek might just fit the bill!
Handbags or sunglasses? Bags. Mmm Alexander Wang...
Leather or jersey fabric? Leather, hands down!

Angela, what makes you feel Spoilt? A McDonalds sundae after a day at the beach, with extra chocolate topping on the top and bottom!
