IMATS Sydney 2010

International Makeup Artist Tradeshow (IMATS) is an international trade show for makeup artists and beauty buffs who are looking for the best brands, latest trends, live shows and great sales under one roof. Each year the trade show packs up and travels to cities around the world to Toronto, Sydney, London, Vancouver, New York and Los Angeles to delight makeup artists, students and beauty fanatics the world over. The best bit: unlike most trade shows IMATS is open to the general public!

I was really impressed with IMATS Sydney - I did not make the event last year as I was attending a fashion event, and being the first year to exhibit in Sydney the exhibitor list was pretty ordinary. But this year proved to be bigger and better with brands such as Make Up For Ever, Serge Louis Alvarez (SLA), Gorgeous Cosmetics, Ben Nye, Beauty Pod, Face Atelier, Smashbox and DuWop.

My best friend Aryanny accompanied me at IMATS Sydney. We wandered through the aisles stocking up on makeup and beauty books, while playing with products and taking snaps of the cool special FX models. There was body art, airbrush makeup and special FX in every corner, all of them looking fantastic. I bumped in to an old friend of mine, photographer Johan Westen who I met back in the day when I was modelling and starting out as a makeup artist. He attends a lot of fashion and media events - just another day in the office for Johan!

Debbie Muller, makeup artist and CEO of Final Checks Makeup Academy was flat chat coordinating the models for IMATS Alice in Wonderland stage show. Deb helped me get started in the makeup industry, she was my teacher and mentor and to this day we still keep in touch. When not working on set or teaching at Final Checks, she teaches at the huge Hair & Beauty department at TAFE Northern Sydney Institute, Meadowbank which is where I was enrolled. I love how encouraging and hands-on the ladies are in the beauty department and strongly encourage any aspiring makeup artists, hair dressers or beauty therapists to contact them.

What I Bought: Gorgeous Cosmetics Base Perfect Foundation, 2 BeautyPods, 'Amazing Face' makeup book by Scott Barnes, Ben Nye loose dust in Gold, Smashbox Lipgloss and Smashbox Mascara.

Who here is a Gorgeous Cosmetics fanatic? I am! So it was a wonderful surprise to bump in to Gorgeous Cosmetics & Academy of Makeup CEO, David McConnell whom I recognised through my research of Gorgeous Cosmetics and the academy which I have always wanted to study at. David is someone I look up to because he has worked hard to create an amazing cosmetics brand and an extremely reputable makeup academy - possibly the best in the country. We had a chat about some of my favourite Gorgeous products and said we will keep in touch. I hope we do because Gorgeous is my ULTIMATE beauty indulgence.

As I was leaving I saw award-winning makeup artist and author Rae Morris stocking up on products and I just had to say hello seeing as though I had interviewed her earlier this year. She was very warm, sweet and genuine and gave me a sneak peek at the new book she has just launched. I wanted to buy a copy but Rae said they were to be released the following day (which I was not attending) so I was a little sad to miss the launch. Rae was kind enough to have a photo with me for the blog but because my camera is on its last legs, the shot was blurry and grainy. Poor Rae - I chased her down the aisle like a stalker to ask for a second photo to which she was happy to pose for. Thank you Rae for taking the time to chat with me and for giving me a sneak preview of your book. Now I just need to get my hands on a copy!!
